Letter To The Fallen

Did you know that your eldest
slept on your grave?
Not even his momma
Could drag him away.

The mourners had come
and all gone away
but daddy's little man
insisted he stay.

He said he was waiting
for the angels to come;
that he needed to tell them
all that you had done.

He wanted to tell them
how brave you had been.
he wanted God to know
you stood up to bad men

And that although God had chosen
to take you away,
he understood that heroes
don't always get to stay.

He missed his daddy
and wanted to cry
but he lifted his chin
and saluted the sky.
